This dataset contains 5,637 features with a total area of 253,258 square kilometers (km2). The majority are lakes (named and unnamed). Estuaries and inland seas are included as well.
The largest of these features, according to the atlas geometry, is Lake Baikal. The calculated area given here is 33,563 square kilometers; modern science puts the lake's area at 31,722 square kilometers (9.5% smaller than Piadyshev's atlas would have us believe). Lakes Ladoga and Balkhash come next; 5,604 of the inland water bodies in this layer have an area of less than 1,000 km2; 5,416 have an area less than 100 km2; 4,231 have an area less than 10 km2; 823 have an area of less than 1 km2. The mean area is 44.9 km2.
