Together, the 59 map sheets in this collection constitute the <a href="http://dighist.fas.harvard.edu/projects/imperiia/items/show/321" target="_self">Geographic Atlas of the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Poland, and the Grand Duchy of Finland</a>. The metadata for each sheet in this collection consists of the following:<br />
<ul>
<li>Title: a simplified English translation of the name of the administrative unit</li>
<li>Alternate names: the Cyrillic name given on the sheet as well as a Latin transliteration</li>
<li>Scale: the scale ratio provided by the Library of Congress</li>
<li>Sheet #: the integer representing the order in which the sheet appears in the atlas</li>
<li>Sheet publication year: the year in which the sheet was originally published, prior to compilation in 1827</li>
</ul>

The <em>korchma</em>, translated in this project as tavern, was a genre of drinking establishment - one native to the Baltic provinces and the provinces formed from the lands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Coffee and tea were rarities in a korchma, as was the sale of food: local custom was to bring your own snacks. A korchma doubled as an inn, with two small rooms for travelers and a saray, or courtyard, for keeping animals and stowing goods. <a href="http://dlib.rsl.ru/viewer/01003924229#?page=374" target="_blank">Read the entry in the <em>Brokgaus-Efron Encyclopedia</em></a>.<br /><br />The atlas locates taverns in only nine provinces: Lifliand (1), Kurliand (10), Vilen (1), Grodnen (4), Minsk (2), Volynia (5), Podol'ia (1), Kiev (3), and Chernigov (1).

Two "common Tatars" distribute alms <span>as they exit the mosque</span>. There is a mulla wearing a turban and a haji next to him - recognizable due to the white band. Among the mendicants there is a chapelet and another haji - "<span>the rest are miserable Gypsies." Demidov also assures his readers that </span><span>"theses images of charity without ostentation are common outside of mosques." </span>(31)<br /><br /><span>17 August 1837</span>

Tatar Peasant Houses (Maison de Paysans Tatars)
Description
An account of the resource
Tatar peasant homes were often built into the sides of hills. Here a man and a small boy stand on a terrace looking into the distance. <br /><br />Demidov trains his Orientalizing gaze on the interior and exterior of the "typical" Tatar home, describing the scent of aromatic herbs, the comforts of the divan, and the significance of the terrace, where the family would spend countless hours grinding flour, drying everything from fruit to laundry, and passing news through the open air. "The terrace is, in a word, the observatory - the watch tower of the family." From here one listens to the call of the ombashchi. This elevated ground is the Tatar's public - and at times even a political - space. (42)

An account of the resource
A Crimean Tatar family travels on horseback and on foot near Yalta. Women in burkas carry infants in their laps. <br /><br />According to Demidov, the Tatars were free to pursue their favorite economic activities, including the farming "at which they excel." Demidov praised their mastery of irrigation, orchardry and gardening and pointed out that "during the summer season, the influx of wealthy people who come to inhabit the southern coast of Crimea offers Tatar farmers a profitable outlet for their products..." Demidov described the Tatars as "well-housed, well-dressed, and, in a word, well-provided with all they could need for their way of life." (30) <em>Demidov's view of Tatar life should be read against the many sources that offer a dramatically different perspective.</em><br /><br />The lithograph is dated 15 August 1837.
