Issued by the Cartographic Establishment of A. Ilyin in St. Petersburg. Chromolithography. This map depicts Kyiv as it appeared in the mid-1880s when its population passed 200,000, under the under direct imperial Russian rule. Thanks to its connection to Russian railway network, its economy was thriving, experiencing the Industrial Revolution. The plan’s legend in 8 points indicates the different districts of the city. It was produced by Alexey Ilyin's Cartographic Establishment, which was Russia's leading commercial mapmaker. The establishment was founded in 1859 as the Chromolithography of Poltoratsky, Ilyin, by General Staff officers Alexey Afinogenovich Ilyin (1832-1889) and Vladimir Poltoratsky (1830-1886). It was renamed after Poltoratsky's departure in 1864. After the death of Alexey Afinogenovich Ilyin, one of his sons, Alexey Alexeevich Ilyin (1857-1942), assumed control over the firm. By 1882, the enterprise reached its zenith, producing up to 6 million impressions, having all but a monopoly on Russian civil cartography. This map was issued alongside other maps of the Russian Empire, probably in the order they appear on its back cover: St. Petersburg (1885), Moscow, Warsaw, Riga, and Kyiv. Other plans are said to be planned (the first one, Odessa, was published in 1888, so our copy was probably printed before that date). The plan of St. Petersburg is seemingly the only one of that series to have widely circulated, as WorldCat reports is owned by 5 institutions, one copy was sold in auction in 2021 (Arenberg Auctions, 1875  €), and another is currently for sale. The other plans, including our of Kyiv, are much rarer, with no copy found in WorldCat, nor copies recorded at auction or in dealer catalogs.\" (Bolivar Old Prints, 2024)"},{"label":"Pub List No","value":"15970.000"},{"label":"Pub Type","value":"Separate Map"},{"label":"Pub Height cm","value":"18"},{"label":"Pub Width cm","value":"12"},{"label":"Image No","value":"15970002.jp2"},{"label":"Download 1","value":"<a href=https://www.davidrumsey.com/rumsey/download.pl?image=/213/15970002.jp2 target=_blank>Full Image Download in JP2 Format</a>"},{"label":"Download 2","value":"<a href=https://www.extensis.com/support/geoviewer-9 target=_blank >GeoViewer for JP2 and SID files</a>"},{"label":"Authors","value":"Ilyin, A."},{"label":"Creator","value":"Aleksei Ilyin"},{"label":"Source","value":"https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/s/j78rok"},{"label":"Date","value":"1887"},{"label":"Format","value":"Scale 1:252,000"},{"label":"Language","value":"Russian"}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/iiif/RUMSEY~8~1~360539~90127688/full/!96,96/0/default.jpg","format":"image/jpeg"},"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/iiif/RUMSEY~8~1~360539~90127688/full/!1024,1024/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/iiif/RUMSEY~8~1~360539~90127688","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level1.json","protocol":"http://iiif.io/api/image"},"format":"image/jpeg","width":12438,"height":12910},"on":"https://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/iiif/m/RUMSEY~8~1~360539~90127688/canvas/c1"}],"width":12438,"height":12910,"attribution":"A.
