Welcome to the Imperiia Gallery
We are supported by a Digital Humanities Advancement Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and by the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University.
Our project documents, interrogates, visualizes, and interprets the history of Imperial Russia. In other words, we are building a spatial history of the Russian Empire. Our work is an example of historical GIS, an experiment in new forms of analysis, and a laboratory for developing new genres for narrating the past.
This Gallery Site is home to several collections of maps and other visual materials utilized in three finished projects ("Deal: History through Playing Cards"; "The Princely Playboy of Crimea"; and "The Geographical Atlas") and two flagship projects of the 2021-2022 academic year, including the newly-launched "Urbans Legends" project.
