Banyas

Ah, the famous Russian steam bath. News, gossip, relaxation, and hygiene - all in one place.

Oddly, banyas occur on less than 10% of the town plans in the collection. But don't be fooled. The fact that most turn up in Simbirsk, Chernigov, and Kharkov provinces suggests that their relative scarcity is a function of the thoroughness of the urban visions drawn up by most local officials. (And we should mention that the plans are concerned only with public banyas.)

Banyas were everywhere: we just can't always see them on the plans.

As far as those we CAN see, it pays to pay attention to relative location. Certain aspects of their collective geography are unsurprising. Many, for example, sit on or near river banks. But sometimes, the location of a banya strikes us as plain old curious. Sometimes it strikes us as potentially significant.

Keep an eye out for the relationship between banyas and breweries, for example. And see if you can explain what links banyas to butcheries throughout much of Simbirsk province. Were banyas centrally located? Were they accessible?

You might want to open up the "Compare Towns" section of the interactive visualizations. Try comparing the distribution of banyas to the distribution of apothecaries or hospitals or almshouses.

Do you detect any patterns? Are you brimming with "why" questions and desperate to learn more about what happened at the baths? Good.

"16. Public banyas" (Nakhichevan)

On the banks of the Donska River. The banya is in what must have been a beautiful location, surrounded by orchards.

"E. Public banyas" (Berdichev)

A long-standing fixture smack dab in the town center, on Lake Gnilopiat (which translates, roughly, to "Putrid Five Lake"). NB: If ever you want to go down an entertaining rabbit hole, we recommend diving into the etymology of this lake. The…

"7. Public banyas" (Borisoglebsk)

On the Voronia River on the west side of town.

"7. Public banyas" (Rozhestvensk)

There are 2 banya sites on the right bank of the Ordesh River. And in between them? A brewery (6).

"9. Site for butcheries, public banyas, leather and other factories" (Alatyr)

This multipurpose - or simply as-yet-undefined-purpose - site sits at the northern edge of the town center, on the left bank of the Sura River. It is just downstream from the town wharf.

"6. Site for butcheries, public banyas, leather and other factories" (Ardatov)

On the right bank of the Alatyr River. The site is located just outside the wall in the northwest corner of town.

"8. Site for public banyas, butcheries, leather and other factories" (Buinsk)

This plan hits us over the head with the fact that it is, well, a plan. For what might happen at some point in the future. And in Buinsk, at some point in the future, there might be a public banya here. And it might or might not find itself alongside…

"6. Site for butcheries and banyas" (Karsun)

Located on the left bank of the Barysh River at the place where the old course of the river meets the new one. (The old course flowed just to the east.)

"6. Public banyas" (Kurmysh)

The banya sits apart on the northern edge of town, separated from the Sura River by blank, undefined space.

Just outside the town walls on the right bank of the Volga River.

"9. Public banyas" (Syzran)

On the western edge of town, almost off the map. The banya is also on the edge of the area of spring flooding of the Syzran, next to the space reserved for leather factories (10).

"5. Public banyas" (Kungur)

On the right bank of the Iren' River. To the west of the banya (on the other side of the river) is a landscape dotted with lakes and small settlements.

"Public banyas" (Moscow)

Multiple locations are noted on the legend, which is natural given the size of Moscow. However, the image quality is less than ideal and as a result it is difficult to match the legend items with numbered sites on the plan.

"7. Public banyas" (Kolomna)

On the right bank of the Moskva River. The image quality makes it difficult to say much more about this banya.

This banya is in the southwest corner of town, on the Kharkov River.

"8. Public banyas" (Bogodukhov)

The banya site is set apart in the southern part of town, at the confluence of the Merlo River and a small stream running through town.

"10. For the banya" (Volchansk)

Location matters! This banya occupies a space on the right bank of the Vol'cha River adjacent to a silk plantation. Imagine the wind rustling through the mulberry trees as you emerge from the steam room...

Imagine finishing work at the brewery (7), emerging into the evening light, heading east to the bridge over the Zhizdra River and walking along the right bank of the river past the town walls, out into the relative liberation of the banya.

"13. Public banyas" (Borzna)

The Borna banyas are located at the center of the geographic space of the city on the right bank of the Borzna River, near the meat and fish shops (11).

"13. Public banyas" (Berezna)

The banyas are on the west side of town, right across from the meat and fish shops (8).

The banyas are on the west side of town, on the far side of the Chibrizh River (where it meets the Gorodnia River).

"E. Public banyas" (Konotop)

On the left bank of the Educh' River - a place where the river is quite wide. Next to the meat shops (9).

The banyas are around the corner from the meat and fish shops (10) on the banks of the Svidnia River.

"12. Public banyas" (Mglin)

Near the southernmost bridge over the Sudinka River.

"15. Public banyas" (Novgorod Seversk)

The banyas have a prime location on the right bank of the Desna River, just downstream from the guardhouse (7) and brewery (17). The closest feature, however, is a government office building (2) just west of the baths.

"9. Public banyas" (Novoe Mesto)

The baths are on the Studenets River on the western edge of town, not far from the meat and fish shops (8).

"12. Public banyas" (Nezhin)

On the right bank of the Oster River, just downstream from the brewery (10).

"10. Public banyas" (Oster)

On the left bank of the Mopovka, just before it joins the Desna River. The banya is located between the meat shops to the east (8) and the butchery to the west (11).

"7. Public banyas" (Pogar)

Just north of the town center on the Sudost River. (Just a block or two down from the meat and fish shops.)

"15. Public banyas" (Sosnitsa)

In the northeast corner of town, on the banks of a small river.

"17. Public banyas" (Starodub)

The easternmost banya is next to (what looks to be) a lovely park on the right bank of the Babenets River, south of the town center. There is a second location on the left bank, in the town center, just downstream from the fish shops. A third banya…

"13. Public banyas" (Surazh)

At the southern edge of town, on the right bank of the Iput River.

"17. For the public bath" (Rostov)

The Rostov banya is located in the southeast corner of town, on the Don River. At least, that was the space the planners envisioned it occupying at some undefined point in the future of Rostov.)

"16. Banyas" (Chernigov)

There is so much happening within the space of Chernigov. The banyas - there are two of them - are located on the west side of town along the Strizhen River. One is across from the seminary (D). And the other? Across from the slaughterhouse (18).

"9. Banya" (Mariupol)

This location is unlike most of the others, wedged between the sites of the slaughterhouse (10) and blacksmith (8).
