Fortresses

Almost every plan in this collection mentions existing or planned ramparts and trenches: clearly, imperial officials felt that a town must have walls. But not every town had a fortress - or a forepost, for that matter.

In fact, less than 10% fall into this category. Some were major fortresses, such as Shlisselburg and Vyborg. Some were nothing but earthen walls. Ruins. Some were freestanding structures. Some were deeply embedded in urban space.

Those of you paying close attention will notice that some of the fortresses included here are NOT included in the Vantage Point visualizations. That is because in cases such as Mozdok or Kizliar, the legends do not reference the fortresses despite their being clearly demarcated on the plan.

You might also notice that this group includes only towns with features marked "fortress" or "forepost." Other towns have features marked "castle" (zamok, rather than krepost'). Interested in comparing the geographies of those two very closely related categories? Great! Try using the "Compare Towns" Vantage Point and see what you can see

Annotation (Mozdok): "unlabeled fortress wall"

The unlabeled fortification lies north of the ramparts of the town (marked 19). An Ossetian settlement (15) occupies the space in between.

Annotation (Kizliar): "unlabeled fortress"

The fortress is located just north(west) of the Topolka River, which runs parallel to the far more substantial Terek River. According to the plan, many town features were to be located within the fortified area, including a stone church (1), a salt…

Annotation (Yamburg): "A. Earthworks fortress"

The Yamburg fortress sits on the right bank / south side of the Luga River, just downstream from the (planned?) pontoon bridge connecting the Narva road to the town center. A church is located just outside the southern wall of the fortress.

Annotation (Vyborg): "III. Koronsontanskaia Fortress"

The fortress is sprawling, with well-articulated walls. The inner space is less defined but contains unmarked buildings as well as gunpowder storage (D), a military prison (E), provisions storehouses (M), and barracks (N).

Annotation (Vyborg): "II. Shmeskaia Fortress"

The fortress sits (on an island?) in between the town proper and the larger fortress to the north.

Annotation (Verkhnii Lomov): "A. Old fortress (remains)"

The site contains two unmarked buildings and two small churches.

"A. Fortress" (Velikie Luki)

The fortress is surrounded by lakes Chistoe and Tinovatoe and the Diamlianka River. The area on the other side of the lakes looks to be covered in vegetation. Perhaps it is hilly. There is a small church to the north.

Annotation (Tver): "A. Fortress"

The fortress is embedded in the urban space and contains a cathedral (B), chancellery (C), and a pool or pond (D).

Annotation (Tula): "A. Fortress"

The fortress is in the heart of Tula. It holds a cathedral church (B) and much of the space is designated for government buildings (1).

The fortress sits on Lake Solomenskoe and serves as the site of planned government buildings.

Annotation (Tobolsk): "A. Fortress"

The fortress contains a cathedral church (B), the residence of the archbishop (C), a gostiny dvor (D), and at least one other church. An additional church sits just outside the walls.

The fortress is a key central feature of the imperial capital.

Annotation (Smolensk): "1. Royal fortress with squares"

The fortress occupies much of the space of the town, while the royal fortress itself (1) sits on the west side. A complex system of streets and churches lies within it.

Annotation (Shlisselburg): "A. Shlisselburg Fortress"

The fortress sits apart from the rest of the town, devoid of definition.

Annotation (Sheshkiev): "A. Old earthworks fortress"

A classic, simple, earthworks quadrilateral.

The fortress/citadel complex and the town of Pavlovsk are one and the same - everything is contained within the walls, which sit at the confluence of the Don and Ossred rivers.

Annotation (Ostrov): "A. Stone fortress"

The fortress sits on an island (and in case you are wondering, the word "Ostrov" - the name of the town - means "island") on the Velikaia River and contains a cathedral church. The planned features of the town all sit opposite the fortress on the…

Annotation (Oranienbaum): "A. Fortress"

Fortifications are marked on either side of the Lower Pond. The one located east of the pond sits opposite the palace and next to a large area (C) designated as town gardens.

Annotation (Nizhnii Lomov): "A. Old fortress surrounded by trenches"

There is nothing on the plan to describe the fortress other than a pair of parallel dashed lines, and yet somehow the place seems forlorn. Decrepit. Slightly askew. And yet it is the anchor of an array of planned spaces - dozens of neat rectangles -…

Annotation (Narva): "A. Site of the town of Narva"

The site is clearly a fortress, though the legend does not specify it as such.

Annotation (Mokshan): "A. Earthworks fortress"

The fortified area contains a church and other unidentified buildings.

Annotation (Kurmysh): "A. Old earthworks fortress"

The site contains the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin (B).

Annotation (Elat'ma): "B. Old city kremlin"

Elat'ma's fortress is embedded in the center of the town and contains 3 planned features: a church, government headquarters, and residences for the town police chief and treasurer.

Nothing more than a tiny corner. The barest sketch of a place.

Annotation (Belyi): "A. Fortress"

The fortress is located just east of the castle (zamok). next to a water mill owned by nobleman from Smolensk (C). Site for a cathedral church (1), residences for clergy (2) and the governor (3), and the chancellery building (4) are laid out within…

Annotation (Rogachev): "D. Forepost"

This beautifully formed fortress on the right bank of the Dniepr River is just west of town.

Annotation (Starii Bykhov): "Fortress area"

The fortress is on the Sapezhinka River, with the much larger Dniepr just beyond. Within it are a castle (A), Catholic church (B), Jewish school (C), the Church of the Pious (D), and a Uniate church (E).

Annotation (Belgorod): "A. Belgorod fortress"

Two churches and the residence of the archbishop are located within the picturesque fortress at Belgorod. Two more churches are outside the southwest corner, and two more along the west wall.

The fortress will contain the government buildings planned for the town.

Annotation (Izium): "B. Citadel"

The ruins are right on the coast of the Black Sea, near the palace square.

Annotation (Tsaritsyn): "A. Earthern fortification and Don defensive line"

This fortification is part of the Don defensive line meant to protect Muscovite territory from slave raids and other incursions from the Crimean Tatars.

Annotation (Chernii Yar): "10. Fortress with earthworks"

A substantial pentagonal fortress on the right bank of the Volga River.

Annotation (Smolensk): "A. Fortress"

This is one of the most elaborate fortresses in the collection. Located on the left bank of the Dniepr River, it contains almost all elements of the town, including the citadel (B), male and female monasteries (D, F G), seminary (E), cathedral church…

Annotation (Rostov): "A. Fortress"

The one-word label "fortress" does a disservice to the elaborate architecture of the Rostov fortress, located on the shores of Lake Nera.

Annotation (Nizhnii Novgorod): "A. Fortress"

The fortress at Nizhnii contains the chancellery and governor's residence along with a smattering of churches.

Annotation (Kharkov): "A. Fortress"

The fortress on the left bank of the Lopan River contains almost all built features of the town, including monastery, chancellery, and shops.
