Boulevards

What distinguishes a boulevard from a street? Good question. In Kiev, Kerch, Bogodukhov, and Pereiaslav, the legends actually note the presence of a planned or existing boulevard. In the other 22 instances, we rely on the presence of trees - or the graphic representation of trees, to be precise - to distinguish a boulevard... which can be understood as a central thoroughfare intended for pedestrian leisure as well as business.

You will probably find that glancing at the thumbnails below will not be enough to give you a sense of where boulevards were located. To see the tree-lined streets properly, be sure to page through the collection and inspect the place of each boulevard within the town space.

And ask yourself, what anchors these thoroughfares in their respective towns? Where do they begin and end?

boulevard/park in Bakhmut

The line between boulevard and park gets blurry at times. This is one of those times. And yet the message is clear: there is a tree-lined channel running through the center of Bakhmut.

"I. Boulevard" (Bogodukhov)

This is the only boulevard listed in a legend as a current feature.

boulevard in Gorodishche

The boulevard runs east/west through the square that will become - by the looks of the almost-empty plan - the main town square.

boulevard in Feodosiia

A tree-lined street and verges on a ravine that must itself be filled with shrubs and trees.

boulevard / tree-lined walls in Kuznetsk

Another example of tree-lined walls sneaking into the "boulevards" collection. Kuznetsk puts in a strong showing in terms of greenspace: be sure to inspect the full canvas.

"14. Boulevard" (Pereiaslavl)

One of two boulevards included in the legend. This one runs along the Trubezh and Alta rivers.

boulevard in Sol'tsy

This plan is bare-bones, and yet the trees are there, lining a street running east/west toward the bridge over the Kruttsa River.

boulevard in Tomsk

Without this corridor of green it is difficult to make sense of the cluttered, low-resolution space of this Siberian town.

boulevard in Toropets

A tree-lined boulevard running from the Trinity Monastery (A) to the shores of Lake Solomenskoe.

boulevards in Tver

Tree-lined streets running north/south and east/west on the right-bank (of the Volga) side of town

boulevard in Vyshnii Volochek

A pair of green axes, perpendicular to one another and standing in sharp contrast to the curving chaos of the Tsna River.

boulevard in Deshkino

The tree-lined streets run along the river on the east side of town.

boulevards in Nizhnii Novogorod

In addition to tree-lined walls, parks, and a garden, the plan for Nizhnii Novgorod includes a lovely tree-lined street running down the northern edge of town from the blacksmith shops (18) to the Oka River, and from the river past the seminary and…

"27. For the embankment boulevard" (Kiev)

Located along the Dniepr (Dnipro) River; one of the few labeled boulevards in the collection.

boulevard in Peremyshl

A tree-lined street near the shores of lakes "Podpornoe" and "Glubokoe"

tree-lined town walls in Spask

We generally treat town walls as a different category, but the prevalence of tree-lined streets around Spask seem worthy of inclusion.

unlabeled boulevard in Sviiazhsk

Though the legend does not mention the presence of a town wall, this "boulevard" is most likely meant to suggest some kind of defined tree-lined perimeter.

tree-lined streets in Mamadysh

The tree-lined streets are almost the only identifiable feature on this spartan plan of Mamadysh.

boulevard in Nolinsk

Running along the southern edge of town and northward the road to Viatka.

boulevard in Zhitomir

Parallel to the town walls, with one end at the monastery.

boulevards in Berdichev

Two pour in from the east toward the town center; the other runs more or less north/south midway between the western town wall and Lake Gnilopiat.

"5. For the main boulevard" (Kerch)

The planned boulevard will hem in the main part of town, beginning on the shores of the Azov Sea and ending at the foot of Mt. Mithridates. How's that for a dramatic setting?

boulevards in Yekaterinoslav

The town walls are lined with trees, as are two major promenades providing an axis of shade and windbreaks to the southern town.

boulevard in Kaluga

A classic boulevard running parallel to the town walls from the left-bank warehouses (11) on the west side of town to the breweries (12) on the east side. From the pedestrian perspective, it all starts and ends on the Oka River.
