Mapping the Atlas

[UNDER CONSTRUCTION]

The first set of "mappings" to post to the project site interrogate the spatial structure of the empire as it is described on the sheets of the Geographical Atlas of the Russian Empire produced by V. P. Piadyshev over the course of the 1820s. In fact, the maps in "Orientations," "Orders of Magnitude," "Centrality," "Connectivities," and "Densities" do not include information from any other source. They are maps born of maps. Maps that explore a limited, yet fascinating, set of questions about locations and the relationships among them.
