Economic Sites
This collection of atlas layers is more arbitrary than most. Factories, mines, customs houses, and taverns have precious little in common with one another. They operated at different scales, were governed by different bureaucratic institutions, and played altogether different roles in the Russian economy. But within the context of the Geographic Atlas, they come together as sites in which production and/or exchange, rather than population size and tax status, are the defining characteristics.
